From Pastor Davies – 11/15/16
On November 24th we will celebrate Thanksgiving Day. For over 300 years one of the favorite Thanksgiving hymns has been Martin Rinkart’s “Now Thank We All Our God,” the first line of which reads: “Now thank we all our God with heart and hands and voices.” Written at the end of the Thirty Years War for the people of his native Saxony, it comes out of a background of personal suffering and tragedy. With it, he called the people of his parish and community to renewal and rebuilding, thanking God that their lives had been spared. True gratitude, as the hymn expresses, begins with an inner state of appreciation which evidences itself through deeds and words. November is the time of the year when we give special thanks to God for our abundant blessings as individuals, as Christians, and as a nation.
November 20th is Stewardship Dedication Sunday. This is the day when we make our pledge of financial commitment to the church for 2017. This is not some mechanical fund-raising act. It is a sacramental experience by which inner gratitude is tangibly demonstrated. During worship on this Sunday we will gather in the sanctuary to bless God for all our gifts through songs of praise and prayers of praise.
Stewardship Dedication Sunday and Thanksgiving Day are two holy occasions when we acknowledge “with heart and hands and voices” our gratitude, God’s ownership, humanity’s indebtedness, and our response to God’s love expressed in Christ our Lord.
I pray that all of us here at MPC will discover the joy of generosity through our giving.
