Calling a New Pastor
The Book of Order of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) requires that the process for calling a new pastor cannot be initiated until the current serving pastor has departed from the church. Following Dr. Weaver’s retirement on February 29, 2016, the process is:
- The Executive Presbyter of St. Augustine Presbytery will preach on the first Sunday in March and during that service talk with us about next steps.
- The Session will meet and elect an Interim Pastor Search Committee who will begin the process of securing the services of an interim pastor to serve with our current church staff.
- After the interim is employed and begins his/her service, the Congregational Nominating Committee will nominate to the congregation a Pastor Nominating Committee of a number determined by the Session. A Congregational meeting will be called to elect the PNC.
The Interim will lead the congregation in a period of discernment to an understanding of the ministry to which God is calling us in the future. This will help the PNC in its search for pastoral leadership. The average time between the departure of a current pastor until the call of a new installed pastor is 18 to 24 months.
